Our story

Woven one string at a time, on a Mayan loom

In the Yucatán, hammock-weaving is an art passed down for generations. A Mayan hammock is made by hand, string by string, on a wooden loom — thousands of fine cotton threads opened into a net that molds around you as you lie in it. The open weave lets air move through, so a good hammock stays cool in the heat of the day and wraps you gently for the night. Hamaca Maya works directly with weavers across the Yucatán, bringing these hand-woven hammocks to gardens, verandas and the slow afternoons they were made for.

How it's made

Each hammock is woven by hand on a wooden loom, one fine cotton string at a time. The threads are tied and opened into the distinctive net, then the ends are finished with the braided cords and the spreader bars that hold it taut.

How to use it

Hang it between two solid points about a metre and a half apart and about two metres off the ground. Sit in the centre, then swing your legs in and settle so the net cradles you diagonally. To get out, swing your feet to the ground and let the hammock lower you gently.

Good to know

How do I care for it?

Hand-wash in cool, mild soapy water and air-dry in the shade, out of harsh sun. The cotton is durable but gentle care keeps the weave soft. Take it in during heavy rain if it is the indoor model.

Is it a medical or health product?

No. It is a hand-woven hammock for lounging and sleeping. It is not a medicine and not intended to address any condition — it is simply for comfort and rest.

Is a hammock comfortable for sleeping?

Yes. The open net moulds around you and lets air move through, so it stays cool and supports you gently. Lie diagonally across the weave for the flattest, most restful position.

How many strings does one have?

A hand-woven Mayan hammock can use thousands of individual cotton strings, all tied and opened into the net by hand. The more strings, the finer and softer the weave.

How do I hang it?

Hang it between two solid points about one and a half metres apart and about two metres high. Thread the ropes through the loops at each end and secure them to posts, beams or strong trees.

How are Mayan hammocks made?

They are woven by hand on a wooden loom, one fine cotton string at a time, in a tradition passed down for generations in the Yucatán. The net is opened and finished with braided cords and spreader bars.
